The owner of the Oxbow was kind enough to give us a ride to the trailhead and we began the 10 miles to Spruce Lake. 5 miles in, Dave was scheming again; he just wasn’t in a hiking mood. He began to hatch a plan that would get us out of this section of the woods a day early. From the comfort of town we could decide if we wanted to attempt the rest of the trail. I didn’t care either way, as long as we got to spend time at West Canada and Cedar Lakes – two of my favorite spots on the trail.

The trail leading to Spruce Lake was as wild as the year before. Quick ups and downs over rocks and roots and mud. Glimpses of the lake through the trees. I enjoy that type of terrain, but it does make for slow going. We reached Spruce Lake and before long the loons were calling.
