Northville to Silver
Lake

Jess
We dawdled to the trailhead – stopping for ice cream, a
final meal with Mom, and other last-minute provisions. We
were looking forward to disappearing into the woods for a
couple of weeks, but it was clear we both lacked the spring
in our step we had the year before. The Northville-Placid
Trail had become an anticipated end-of-summer tradition, but
we couldn’t deny reality – it’s a long hike!
It was late afternoon, nearly evening, before we started the
7.5 miles to Silver Lake. Luckily, night hiking was not
entirely new to us; this wasn’t the first time we had
lingered too long in the daylight hours. The hike itself was
uneventful, our headlamps dutifully guiding the way. Just
after 9:00 pm we knew we were almost there; low growls and
frantic yip yaps rang out from up the trail. The lean-to
obviously occupied – by man and by beast – we stumbled to a
tent site, dropped our packs, and began to set up camp. Dog
still barking, it began to rain.
An auspicious first day, it was not. |
