3.4 mile hike from Stephens Pond to Lake Durant Public Campsite - Blue Mt. Lake

8/27/02

11:45 am - Lake Durant Public Campsite:  Well wasn't I pissing and moaning last night?  I made it up from the pond and actually had a very good night.  Very positive.  I thought of all of the ways that I could prolong the trip and really talked myself into a better mood.  I did some reading and someone left an old backpacker magazine in the lean-to so I devoured that cover to cover.  I also saw the biggest, brightest, most awe inspiring orange/yellow moon come up over the pond and reflect down onto it.  It was spectacular and really made me think of all of the great moments I have had thus far, and will most likely miss out on if I bail out early.  When I first caught a glimpse of it from the lean-to I didn't have a clue what it was, I recall thinking 'no way that that is the moon' - but it was.

Right now I am sitting at the trail head, waiting for my mom to swing by on our planned day together.  Only child - what can I say?  I am a mommy and daddy's boy.  Hoping to check out the Adirondack Museum, re-supply, tend to my various wounds and continue the trip.  If there is a logistically placed motel I may even stay the night in town to assure recovery.  I actually am in much better shape than I thought I would be today, apparently I did underestimate my ability to heal.  A bit hungry, looking forward to a nice meal with mom.

Here I am at the NY28 trail head

It really did take a whole lot of positive thinking and a bit of personal guilt to whip myself back into a good hiking mood after the pain and monotony of the blacktop hike up from Wakely Dam.  Seeing my mom pull up to the trail head was a real sight and this day off the trail with her was exactly what I needed to revitalize my spirits.

* Trail Tip - If you plan to re-supply in Blue Mt. Lake you should realize that it is a decent hike into town from the trail head.  The guidebook lists it as a 3 mile hike, but keep in mind it is blacktop and on a busy highway.  Not exactly conditions for the weary hiker.  In addition, if you plan on visiting the Adirondack Museum (I recommend you do) there is a supply and general store on the north portion of Rt. 30 that is better positioned for a mail drop than the local Post Office is.

9:00 pm - Blue Mt. Lake - Motel:  I have decided to stay the night in a rustic cabin/motel here in Blue Mt Lake.  Very cool place, literally a log cabin-esque sort of gig, with a big stone fireplace.  Had a nice day with mom.  Rode into Indian Lake and caught some lunch.  It was pretty interesting, at the diner/bar where we had lunch there was a huge collage of pictures depicting a Hillary Clinton visit - I am assuming on her campaign trail to become a Senator.  She obviously won over this small crowd

I re-supplied the 1st aid kit and picked up my mail drop.  Picked through the food sparingly to keep the weight down.  We even hit some balls at a driving range! I think this was exactly what my spirits needed, a day away from worrying about my feet and the trail.  At night I was able to catch a Yanks/Sox game in my room.  Predictable outcome.... Yanks win, see, I told ya, some things don't change on the trail!
