13.6 mile hike from South Lake, past Cedar Lake, to Carry lean-to

8/25/02

8:02 am - South Lake:  Got some real good stretches of sleep last night and I am psyching myself up for a long one today.  It didn't rain through the night and it was quite windy so my gear dried out nicely.  The water on the lake shore got real choppy last night, hitting the rocks with loud splashes and thumps.  At one point I was convinced there was an animal splashing around down there, but the foamy shoreline this morning lets me know it was just the wind.

Oh wow, I just saw a loon take off over the lake.... the THAP THAP THAP of its wings on the water surface as it skimmed the lake was AMAZING!!!!!  Every now and then the fog on the lake breaks and I can see some pretty scenes.  The blue skies are starting to show.  Today should be a good one.

12:30 - Cedar Lake:  I stop to have lunch at Cedar Lake, which is a gorgeous place.  This would have been a nice camping spot.  The lean-to is up on a hill, overlooking the lake - and a good stretch of tall wild grass and flowers lead down to the water.  Took a nice long swim.  On the way up here I met a group of college kids, from Colgate - real nice bunch.  They must have a hikers club or something there.

Someone left an Emerson Essay book at this lean-to.  I pick it up to replace the book I left at Spruce Lake.
